This is deeply alarming - The impact of the NIC rise on charities is estimated at £1.4bn annually. This comes at a time when charities are already stretched to their limits, grappling with escalating demands for their services while battling declining donations and rising operational costs. Finding money to cover NIC increases will mean reducing the spending on services. Without urgent action, the very survival of many charities will hang in the balance. Who knows when you will need the support of a charity but more than likely you will. Approximately 90% of UK households will use the services of a charity at some point in their lives. Let's hope they still exist when you need them. NCVO and ACEVO, co-signed by 7,361 charities and voluntary organisations, have issued a joint letter to the chancellor outlining their concerns for the sector. Wonderful new instalment of our “Community lens” series of webinars last night, focusing on “Employability and skills”, one of our key impact themes for our funding. Really impressive points of view given by our three panellists (Becca Dean MBE from The Literacy Hubs – working on literacy interventions with younger children; Chris Hillman from Minstead Trust, providing, amongst other things, employability and skills support and advocacy for adults with learning disabilities; and Kirsty Robertson from Motiv8, working with young people who are often transitioning to adulthood with complex backgrounds). The community sector is doing a huge amount, largely under the radar, to enable people to gain employment and the skills for employment. As a funder, it’s always humbling to hear the stories of the people whose lives are changed when they walk through the doors of an innovative, supportive, clever community group we fund – our funded groups put in such hard graft to achieve that. And I say it a lot, but each of our panellists said the same thing in different ways – employability and skills support, whichever stage of life it is offered – is TRANSFORMATIVE. My key take away was that yes, having better chances to gain worthwhile work changes individual lives, and yes, it changes families’ lives. But it changes whole communities and benefits all of society – it reduces the likelihood of claiming benefits for extended periods, it reduces the chances of being caught up in the criminal justice system, it improves health outcomes. These impacts can be positive generationally too – so the impact is hugely long-lasting. The statistic that stuck in my head was that someone with low literacy in Portsmouth is likely to have a life expectancy of 26 years LESS than someone with good literacy in North Oxford. That is one scarily big difference – about half my current lifespan worth. And improving that outcome for that one person in Portsmouth could mean 26 more years of someone contributing tax, taking part in their community, supporting their family, and more. And of course they could also be a customer for 26 more years for many companies! A big shout out to all the companies out there who want to fund charities and the community sector – it is utterly worth it, you’ll get incredible SROI. Lived Experience and trusteeship - a few thoughts, this #TrusteesWeek The two charities I'm a trustee for and the one I work for I have lived experience relating to that cause. For Visionary_UK I'm visually impaired and have worked for two member organisations. For HOME-START OXFORD I'm a dad of two cheeky boys under 5. These are a few things that spring to mind regarding lived experience as a trustee: 1. Representation For me, if a charity is supporting people like me, I would want to see people that are like me within the charity, whether staff, trustees or volunteers. If you don't see yourself you will assume it's not for you! 2. A deeper understanding Having lived through, or living through the issues faced, this gives you a deeper understanding that others will not have, you don't switch off from the issues after the board meeting and sometimes you will just get it when various challenges are raised. 3. A voice I don't believe it's important that the voice of the people you serve is involved, it's vital! Sure, it's not about one person's perspective, but ensuring you have multiple people on the board will give you some basis for understanding. 4. Purpose I'm all about purpose. Making good from the hand you've been dealt. So, aligning your own purpose with the cause will give you drive to ensure the organisation is successful, that purpose doesn't necessarily have to come from lived experience, but those that don't, need to understand their position as allies and champions. 5. Lean into your lived experience I often hear people spouting all sorts of career achievements and say they're not in this position because of their lived experience, which really diminishes the point of lived experience. I can tell you now, I wouldn't be in any of my positions if it wasn't for my lived experience, so I lean into that and unashamedly so! Are you a trustee with lived experience? What Works with Wellbeing? What Works Wellbeing was a leading UK body championing wellbeing through cross-collaboration, research, policy, and practice for almost a decade. Against the backdrop of a challenging funding environment, the centre closed in April 2024 leaving an informative legacy of work. The Our Legacy report details its achievements and links to many of the practical resources it has produced over the years. One of the key things that they focused on was communicating a consistent definition of what wellbeing is.
